A 72-hour water fast should be avoided by individuals with pre-existing conditions, high nutritional needs, or a history of disordered eating. A 3-day fast is not suitable for everyone and requires prior medical approval, particularly for those on medication.

Pregnant or Breastfeeding Individuals: Nutrient needs are high, and fasting can deprive both mother and baby of essential nutrition.

Individuals with Eating Disorders: A 3-day fast can trigger unhealthy, restrictive behaviors.

People with Diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2): High risk of severe hypoglycemia or ketoacidosis, particularly for those on insulin or medication.

Children and Teenagers: Individuals under 18 should not participate.

Underweight Individuals*: Those with a BMI below 18.5 often lack the necessary reserves.

Safe Refeeding After a 72-Hour Fast

Ending a fast properly is just as important as the fast itself. After 72 hours without food, your digestive system has been at rest — reintroducing food too quickly can cause discomfort, bloating, or refeeding syndrome. A gradual ramp-up is essential.

A Practical 36-Hour Ramp-Up

0–12 Hours

Mostly liquids & very soft foods — bone broth, soup, yogurt/kefir, well-cooked vegetables. Your gut needs time to restart enzyme and acid production.

12-24 Hours

Small solid meals — eggs, fish, chicken with rice, potato, or oats. Keep portions moderate as your stomach has shrunk during the fast.

24–36 Hours

Normal meals — then slowly reintroduce higher fiber and fat. Your digestive system is now ready to handle regular food again.

This is where you should be most conservative — medical guidance matters, especially if your intake has been very low. Our staff guides every participant through this process to ensure a safe, nourishing return to eating.

Fasting is not a cure — it facilitates the body's own healing mechanisms. Fasting may not be appropriate for everyone. Contraindications include pregnancy, extreme weakness, certain kidney or cardiac conditions, and some medications. All participants receive a health screening before beginning.
